If you’re still looking for the perfect thing to make mom this Mother’s Day, our DIY Egg Carton Butterfly Vase is just the thing. And don’t worry, there’s still time! The hardest part is literally waiting for paint to dry.
Then, after mom is done oohing and ahhing over her gift that specially made just for her, she can keep it around all spring as a beautiful reminder and porch decor item full of flowers.
For our DIY Egg Carton Butterfly Vase you’ll need a paper egg carton and clean glass jars. Spaghetti jars work great. You’ll also need pipe cleaners, acrylic paint in assorted spring colors,
hot glue or stronger, and scissors.
Who knew empty paper egg cartons could be look so nice? It’s a great way to recycle them, too, without piling on more trash. Plus, it’s a 2 in 1 kind of craft, as you can always simply craft up some beautiful Egg Carton Butterflies for spring without the vase.
- paper egg carton

Begin by thoroughly cleaning out an old jar. I used a spaghetti jar and it worked well. Insure that your jar is completely dry inside and out and start painting the inside with acrylic paints. I found that squeezing the paint right into the jar worked out a little better than dipping the brush into the paint.
Once the jar is completely painted, turn it upside down on some newspaper to allow the excess paint to drip out. Once all of the excess paint has dripped out, take your jar out into the sun and let the paint dry completely.
Cut out each individual egg section and set aside. Once all of your egg sections are cut out, trim up your pieces into a butterfly shape using scissors.
Here’s the fun part! Let your kids paint the butterfly wings with acrylic paint. Allow the butterfly wings to dry completely.
Cut a pipe cleaner in half and bend into the shape of a v. Twist the v into the shape of a butterfly’s body. Leave a small portion of the pipe cleaner not twisted to create the antenna. Glue your pipe cleaner body onto your dried butterfly wings.
Glue butterflies onto your painted glass jar.
Plant a gorgeous flower inside your jar! It’s all done and ready to be given as a gift. Be sure to find more Mother’s Day craft and gift ideas at Our Kid Things!
