It’s no secret that Girls Scouts is an amazing organization, one that I’m excited to see my daughter take part in. It teaches girls lessons that they’ll carry with them throughout their life in age-appropriate activities while having fun and making friends in the process. I was a Brownie during my 3rd grade year and I still remember those who were in my troop and the pride I felt at every badge earned.
In fact, health and fitness have been part of Girl Scouting since girls ran foot races in 1912. Camping is also essential to the Girl Scouts mission. It is about the outdoors, and developing a deep appreciation for nature. Girls enjoy camping with their troop or attending a Girl Scout day and evening or resident sleep-away camp. From high adventure with kayaking, archery and rock climbing to traditional camps with crafts, singing, hiking and cooking over an open fire, Girl Scout camps give girls an opportunity to grow, explore, and have fun under the guidance of caring, trained adults.
In partnership with the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation, Girl Scouts has developed Healthy Habits booklets for volunteers to use in conjunction with their Journey Adult Guides. Through the use of these free resources for Daisies, Brownies, and Juniors, Girl Scout volunteers and families can guide girls in fun, easy ways to achieve “energy balance.”
The three Healthy Habits booklets available for download include:
Between Earth and Sky with Healthy Habits – girls learn about the many plants, and animals that flourish in nature, and also build important leadership skills.
WOW! Wonders of Water with Healthy Habits – girls discover the many forms and paths that water takes and how to protect it. They also learn how to engage in teamwork, speak effectively to convey a message, and inspire others.
Get Moving! with Healthy Habits – girls learn how to use their energy to protect energy and build important leadership skills.
What is energy balance? It’s a principle behind Together Counts, a nationwide program provided by the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation to inspire active and healthy living via physical activity and nutrition, a fundamental underpinning of efforts to reduce obesity. Energy Balance just means balancing the calories we consume with the calories we expend. Energy in equals energy out, whether it’s swimming, taking daily family walks, or going on nature hikes. Just be sure you take advantage of everything that summer has to offer!
In other words, get out there, explore the world, gain knowledge, and have fun! This is also what the Girl Scouts are so great at. See the Girl Scout Council Finder to find a Girl Scout council nearest you.
